Wat Arun – The Temple of Dawn

Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn, is one of the most iconic and recognizable landmarks in Bangkok, Thailand. Located on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun is famous for its stunning architecture and intricate details that reflect traditional Thai design.

The temple is named after Aruna, the Hindu god of dawn. Its central feature is a towering prang (spire) that rises to 70 meters, adorned with colorful porcelain and seashells, which creates a dazzling effect, especially at sunset. The temple complex includes other smaller prangs and several beautiful chapels that house Buddha images and other religious artifacts.

Visitors can explore the temple grounds, climb the steps of the central spire for a breathtaking view of the river and the city, and appreciate the intricate decorations that depict various Buddhist themes and motifs. The temple is particularly stunning when lit up at night, providing a picturesque scene along the river.

Wat Arun is not only a significant religious site but also a popular spot for tourists and photographers. It is easily accessible by boat from the central part of Bangkok, making it a convenient stop on a river tour.

Top Tip: Visit Wat Arun at the same time as Wat Pho and The Grand Palace. Althought Wat Arun is the other side of the river it’s easy to get to.

Wat Arun is best viewed from the other side of the river especially at sunset. There are many cafe’s and restaurants who offer great views but get there early !
