Money & Banking:

Revolut Bank Account

Revolut is a real game changer if you are travelling. I’ve been using it for many years and even despite having a Thai Bank account I still use my Revolut account regularly.

Who are Revolut?

Revolut is an online bank which offers free and subscription-based digital banking services, primarily through a mobile app. Revolut’s mobile app supports spending and ATM withdrawals in 120 currencies and transfers in 36 currencies

Why Revolut?

Revolut is unlike any other bank accounts for the following reasons.

  • You can create an account in minutes
  • You get a proper Bank Sorting Code and Account number so transfers into your account are easy.
  • You can setup your UK Debit card with another bank and pull money from that account into your revolut account in seconds.
  • The Revolut app allows you to create accounts in different currencies in seconds.
  • You can transfer monies between accounts at any time without cost at a really good exchange rate (see below)
  • You can buy currency (or sell it) at a time that suits you. If you are waiting to go away and you see a great rate you can buy it there and then.
  • You can set the App to buy or sell currency when it reaches a certain level. Even when you are sleeping!
  • When you use your card overseas there is no currency conversion. You just use your card like a local and the amount is exactly the same as locals pay.
  • You don’t have to tell the App which country you are as it will automatically the amount from the correct account without you doing anything.
  • You can use your card in an ATM without incuring extra Bank Charges at home. Revolut may charge depending on how often you use ATM’s and what account you have with them. Thailand charge a one off fee for foreign cards of 250 Thai Baht but this is regardless of the amount you withdraw.
  • Revolut is free to join although extra options and packages exist with different benefits.
  • You can buy your foreign currency in advance at a rate you can preset.
  • You can have multiple cards on the account. This is great is you lose a card in an ATM which is very easy in Thailand as you get your cash first.
  • Transfer between your accounts is very quick and easy.
  • You can lock cards and set spending limits instantly on the app.
  • You can create one-time virtual cards for online shopping.
  • Exchange rates are some of the best I have found (see below)
  • You can control your account from a superb phone app.

Great Exchange Rates

At the time of checking (29th Jan 2026 – 13:00) SuperRich gave the best rate but only by £1.17 on a £500 exchange. Even at £2500 the difference was only £5.83

Setting up an account with Revolut takes seconds.

If you want to transfer £500 into Thai Baht do you really want to go to the shopping mall with your passport to save £1.17?

One Massive Advantage

If you use a physical money exchange you get the rate on the day but with Revolut you can setup an online exchange at a certain level e.g. If you go away in a few months and you are watching the rate you can instruct Revolut to exchange when the rate starts to fall between a certain level this is called a “stop order” conversley you can do the reverse and only sell the foreign currency when it reaches a certain level.
