Money and Banking in Thailand

There are many questions when people visit Thailand about how they get local currency, what is the best way to exchange money and what cards are accepted.

Paying for things in Thailand is very easy indeed and will nearly always be similair to what you are used to in any developed country.

Thailand uses the Thai Baht (“bart”)and this is available in a number of coins and notes.

Top Tips

  • Consider using Revolut it is a life saver in Thailand for many reasons. See my article on Revolut and why it’s so good.
  • Consider getting a couple of thousand baht at home in smaller denominations (500 and less) to avoid having to use the ATM when you;ve just landed.
  • If you get a Taxi from the airport you will need small notes. A 1000 baht note is almost useless. Change a 1000 baht note at a 7-11 at the airport by buying some small items or snacks.
  • Tell your bank you are coming out to Thailand to avoid you card being blocked by the banks fraud department.
  • Bring more than one card – ATM’s give cash first and then your card. many people walk away forgetting their card (see below)
  • Always decline the local conversion rate if suggested at ATM’s
  • Take out larger amounts from ATM’s to reduce the impact of the 250 baht ATM fee.
