Credir and debit cards are accepted widely in Thailand. The usual Visa and Mastercard Credit and Debit cards but also other cards like American Express and UnionPay are always widely used.
As with any foreign country the use of the credit or debit card will very often attract other charges back home. You are also at the mercy of exchange rates on the day.
Your credit or debit card can also be used in ATM (Cash Points) but care is to be taken to avoid large charges.
Apple Pay
This is widely used around Thailand at most places. Even some small shops take Apple Pay
Tap to Pay (Contactless)
This is also widely used around Thailand. Use your card in the same way you do in your home country. Like back home you may sometimes need to insert your card and enter your pin number.
QR Code – PromptPay
This is extremely common in Thailand (except 7-11) and is what most Thai people use. Shops that use the QR Code will almost always take cards. QR Codes (or s-can as the locals call it) is often even available when buying food from a street vendor.
PromptPay QR Code scanning is really only available to Thai People with a Thai Banking App and is an immediate bank payment. QR Code scanning apps for foreigners have been introduced recently but aren’t really needed.
Thai Bank Accounts
These are impossible to open as a tourist. Thai Banks have been cutting down on the ease of opening a Bank account here in Thailand. You dont need one unless you are living here.
