The famous Train Market outside Bangkok
The Maeklong Railway Market (Talad Rom Hub) is a famous, 100-meter-long, 100-year-old market in Samut Songkhram, Thailand, where vendors sell fresh seafood, fruits, and vegetables directly on active train tracks. Eight times a day, vendors quickly pull back awnings and goods for a passing train, making it a unique “fold-umbrella” attraction.
Key Details & Tips
Tips: Be cautious, stand behind the red lines, and consider combining this with a visit to the nearby Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.
Location: Near Maeklong Railway Station in Samut Songkhram, about 1-1.5 hours southwest of Bangkok.
Train Times: The train passes through 6-8 times daily, usually around 06:20, 08:30, 09:00, 11:10, 11:30, 14:30, 15:30, and 17:40.
Best Time to Visit: Morning is best for cooler weather and fewer crowds.
What to See/Buy: It is a functioning, authentic, and affordable fresh market, not just a tourist spot, selling local items like mango sticky rice and, for locals, fresh produce.
Why not consider visiting the nearby Floating Market at Damnoen Saduak which is nearby. Alternatively there are a few floating markets actually in Bangkok which are a lot less touristy and where locals actually shop. Taling Chan is one such market
