PromptPay or QR Code scanning with a Bank App is very common in Thailand (except 7-11) and is what most Thai people use on a daily basis. It is used everywhere including street food vendors.
Shops that use the QR Code / PrompPay will almost always take cards although street vendors are unlikely to accept cards.
Whats strange is that paying by QR Code isn’t as quick as using contactless payment although it’s not an onerous tasks by any means.
In larger stores they generate a special code which includes the amount you need to pay and you then use your Thai Banking App on your phone to scan the QR Code and make the payment. When the payment is made the stores machine knows the payment has been made.
In smaller stores they have a QR Code which you scan with the Thai Banking App and you then need to enter the amount you want to pay. Once the payment is made the vendor will want to take a photo of the payment confirmation on your phone.
QR Codes aren’t usually available to tourists as they won’t have the Banking App although some companies are now offering a third party service although this shouldn’t be needed.
If you have a Thai Bank account and Banking App you’ll be able to generate your own QR Code which you can share to others so they can pay you.
